When students make mistakes or answer half correctly, the responses of teachers can either result in confidence building and success, or communicate debilitating messages about student ability. Here Ms. Moore uses several skills to build student confidence. First, she uses an important pattern, Persevere and Return, in handling these situations for positive results. At the same time she shows tenacity in eliciting a complete answer in academic language. All the while she gives the student, Ricardo, agency in calling on the student who will fill in the missing information. And finally she avoids giving excessive praise when he does his final summary.

Use this clip as an opportunity for self-reflection and sharing with colleagues on opportunities you will have to try this move out in your next class. Try writing down the steps you saw her do: [praise him, then cue him -- wait time -- call on someone to supply -- back to him, put it all together -- left out the cool part you had before]
